What happens when your Vitamin B9 levels are too high or too low?
Normal 3.1 – 17.5ng/ml (7.0 – 39.7 nmol/L)
High folate (Vitamin B9) levels can also mean a vitamin B12 deficiency. Body cells need vitamin B12 to use folate.
Doses higher than 1 mg daily may be unsafe. These doses might cause stomach upset, nausea, diarrhea, irritability, confusion, behavior changes, skin reactions, seizures, and other side effects.
How do you reduce high folic acid? Eat your leafy green vegetables, eat your organ meats, and use supplements containing methylfolate. And minimize your folic acid intake. Avoid breakfast cereals, bread, grain products, dietary supplements, and other sources of folic acid fortification.
What is
considered high folic acid levels? The reference range of the red blood cell (RBC)
folate level also varies by age, as follows:
Adults: 140-628 ng/mL or 317-1422 nmol/L.
Children: Over 160 ng/mL or over 362 nmol/L.
Low folic acid (Vitamin B9). A lack of folic acid may be a cause of anaemia. Anaemia means you have fewer red blood cells than normal. Folic acid is a vitamin and is needed to make new cells in the body, including red blood cells.
Can low folic acid cause hair loss? Folate is needed to make and repair DNA molecules. Ageing, defective, and damaged DNA is known to cause hair problems, including alopecia [23]. So a folate deficiency could damage your hair and even prevent healthy hair growth.
What illness causes low folic acid? You may lose folate from your body if you pee frequently. This can be caused by an underlying condition that affects one of your organs, such as: congestive heart failure – where the heart is unable to pump enough blood around the body. acute liver damage – often caused by drinking excessive amounts of alcohol.
Is B12 and folic acid the SAMe? Vitamin B12 works closely with vitamin B9, also called folate or folic acid, to help make red blood cells and to help iron work better in the body. Folate and B12 work together to produce S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), a compound involved in immune function and mood.
How long does it take to recover from low folate? Most people need to take folic acid tablets for about 4 months. But if the underlying cause of your folate deficiency anemia continues, you may have to take folic acid tablets for longer, possibly for life. Before you start taking folic acid, your GP will check your vitamin B12 levels to make sure they're normal.
