How Can Red Light Help with Nasal and Ear Infections and against Bacteria?

Red light therapy (RLT) has shown promising results in alleviating symptoms of nasal and ear infections. Research indicates that all rhinitis symptoms, including nasal congestion, significantly improve after a single red light rhinophototherapy (RLRPT) treatment. Additionally, red light therapy can relieve pain associated with middle ear infections. The duration and frequency of red light exposure for ear pain depend on the severity of the symptoms. It is recommended to expose the ear to the red light for a maximum of ten minutes at a minimum distance of 50 centimeters to avoid burns.

Rhinophototherapy for Rhinitis

Rhinophototherapy has been effectively used to treat both allergic rhinitis (AR) and chronic rhinosinusitis [1, 2]. Three different devices have been developed for this therapy, one of which emits visible red light at a wavelength of 660 nm, known as red light rhinophototherapy (RLRPT).

Preventing and Treating Cold Sores

Red light therapy may also help in preventing and treating recurrent cold sores, which are caused by the herpes simplex virus. The therapeutic effects of red light in this context are attributed to its ability to reduce viral load and promote healing.

Mechanism of Action on Bacteria

Red light kills bacteria via photodynamic action, a process where light-sensitive compounds react with light to produce reactive oxygen species that damage bacterial cells. While red light can be effective, intense blue light, particularly at 415 nm, has been found to be more effective in killing bacteria.

Pain Relief and Anti-Inflammatory Effects

Red light therapy may be beneficial for relieving various types of pain, especially those due to inflammation (irritation and swelling of body tissues). Its anti-inflammatory properties help reduce pain and promote tissue repair.

Can I use red light therapy while on antibiotics?

The redlight treatment is harmless and is suitable for all skin types. People with low blood pressure or who are pregnant, suffer from epilepsy or increased light sensitivity, or are on medication that causes increased light sensitivity (e.g. antibiotics or St. John? s Wort) should, however, refrain from the treatment.

Safety and Usage Guidelines

For most people, red light therapy is safe to use daily and cannot be overdone. It is non-invasive and has virtually zero risks and side effects. However, if any extraordinary results or adverse effects are noticed, it is advised to stop the treatment and consult a physician.
