Addison's disease is not an autoimmune disorder of the hypothalamus. Rather, it is an autoimmune condition that causes primary adrenal insufficiency, in which the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the adrenal cortex—the outer layer of the adrenal glands responsible for producing cortisol, aldosterone, and other essential hormones. The adrenal glands function as part of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, a complex hormonal communication system linking the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and adrenal glands. Disorders affecting any part of this axis can result in adrenal insufficiency, but the underlying causes differ depending on the level at which the dysfunction occurs.
