Hemochromatosis: Understanding Iron Overload and Its Impact on the Body
Introduction Hemochromatosis, commonly known as iron overload disorder , is a condition characterized by excessive absorption and accumulation of iron in the body's tissues and organs. Although iron is essential for critical biological functions—including oxygen transport, energy production, DNA synthesis, and cellular metabolism—excessive iron can become toxic, causing progressive tissue damage and organ dysfunction. The most common form, hereditary hemochromatosis , primarily affects individuals of Northern European ancestry and results from inherited genetic mutations that disrupt normal iron regulation.
