Effects of Sudden Elevation Changes on Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) and Brain Function in Individuals with Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS) When discussing the effects of sudden increases in elevation on the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and brain in individuals with Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS), it is important to consider the unique challenges posed by this autoimmune disorder. APS is characterized by the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies, which significantly increase the risk of abnormal blood clot formation (thrombosis). Exposure to high altitude can amplify several physiological changes that may increase neurological risk in susceptible individuals. At higher elevations, atmospheric pressure decreases, resulting in hypobaric hypoxia—a reduction in the amount of oxygen available to the body.
